photoshop tutorials

Filed under: Home & Family — admin @ 3:20 am

This is just a step by step guide through using various tools in the Photoshop interface to make a sample image. It is wise to save as you go through to make sure you do not lose any work, but we will not this image past todays class.

Whenever it is reffered in the tutorial as File->New or Image -> Adjust -> Levels, the “->” is referring to a top menu bar selection and its subselection you should choose.

Getting Started and Shaped Selections:

Open up Photoshop and Select File -> New
Set the Name to Test_1. Set the width to 320 pixels and height to 240 pixels. You may have to change the units displayed by hitting the drop down box beside the corresponding field. Make sure the mode is RGB and the resolution is 72/pixels/cm. Set the background to transparent and hit OK.
Now select the rectangular Marquee tool (Hotkey M)and draw a selection somewhere in the middle of the screen. You should have a dotted rectangle showing.
In the colour swatch on the tool bar, pick a new foreground colour of your choice by clicking on the foreground colour. Make sure you are in the HSV colour system. The right vertical bar selects the colour hue, while the big section lets you pick the saturation and value for that hue colour. Once you have selected your colour hit OK
Now find your Paint Bucket tool (HotKey G). It may be hidden under your gradient tool icon if it was used before. Just click and hold on the gradient tool and a popup menu will appear showing you the alternative tools under that button. Note: Any tools in the Tool bar that have other options all have a tiny triangle in the lower right corner of their button icon. Now that you have your Paint Bucket tool selected and a new foreground colour picked, click anywhere inside of your selected Marquee in the workspace. You should notice the rectangular section is now filled with the foreground colour. Note: By default the Paint bucket tools options are set to foreground, you may need to set this back if you had previously changed it.
Now experiment with the other Shape Marquee tools and PaintBucket options. Things to try:
Try each of the 4 selection tools (Rectangle, Ellipse, V-Line and H- Line).
Try the various property settings for rectangle and ellipse (Fixed, normal and constrained)
Try using the key shortcuts: To cycle the tool used hold ALT key while clicking on the tool icon (this will cycle through the available tools)
After you have experimented and are comfortable move onto the next section.
